Vianna Granillo Died Following Medical Emergency At Las Colinas Jail In Santee

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (July 14, 2022) – A female inmate identified as Vianna Granillo has tragically died after experiencing a medical emergency at the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility in Santee.

San Diego County police officials are saying that the incident began around 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Vianna Granillo was initially booked into the Riverview Parkway detention center after she was arrested.

This death comes just two weeks after another woman died in custody at the Los Colinas jail.

Liability In San Diego County Inmate Deaths

Thousands of inmates die in custody every year. San Diego, in particular, is notorious for how poorly inmates are cared for. According to the San Diego Tribune, “San Diego has the highest number of “excess deaths” among California’s 12 largest county jail systems, according to a new study commissioned by the civilian review board that oversees the Sheriff’s Department.” There are a number of common causes of inmate deaths.

  • Inmates may be attacked by other inmates.
  • Inmates may be attacked by correctional officers.
  • Chronic health conditions contribute to a substantial portion of inmate deaths.
  • Many inmates are not given adequate care after experiencing an overdose.

All inmate’s have a constitutional right to receive reasonably adequate healthcare. Failing to give inmates care for serious medical conditions could form the basis of a negligence claim. For example, if an inmate is exhibiting signs of an overdose, they must be given prompt treatment. Drugs like Naloxone can reverse the effects of an overdose if they are administered quickly. There are a number of steps that should be taken after an inmate’s death.

  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Jail records should be examined.
  • A thorough, independent investigation should be conducted.

The family of an inmate that died in custody may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. Sadly, though, jails will often fight extremely hard to deny liability for any inmate that dies in their care. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
