The woman was treated at the hospital. A full investigation into the dog attack remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In Fresno Dog Attacks

Millions of people are injured in dog bites every year in the United States. According to the Canine Journal, “approximately 4.5 million dog bites occur in the United States each year, and 800,000 of those bites result in medical care. The U.S. population was approximately 328.2 million people in 2019.” There are a number of steps that dog owners should take in order to prevent others from being bitten.

  • Dog owners should keep their animals on a leash outside the home.
  • Dogs should be properly secured at the owner’s home.
  • Dogs should be well socialized to be around other people when they are young.

Dog owners in California are held strictly liable if they attack someone. Pursuant to California Civil Code 3342, “The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner’s knowledge of such viciousness.” Victims of dog attacks tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Infections

Any person that is injured in a dog attack may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Many victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries for several weeks after an attack. A dog bite injury attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
