One Inmate Died In Sacramento County Main Jail

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (January 22, 2022) – One person died after being found unresponsive in their jail cell at the Sacramento County Main Jail.

Sacramento County officials are saying that the incident took place on Sunday. Correctional officers found a 35-year-old male inmate was unresponsive and lying on the floor.

At some point after being found unresponsive, the inmate was pronounced deceased. It remains unclear if the inmate was given medical care at any time after being found unresponsive.

A full investigation into the incident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Sacramento County Inmate Deaths

Jails are supposed to be places of rehabilitation. But far too often they are places where human beings go to be neglected. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “The mortality rate was higher in state prisons (330 per 100,000 state prisoners) in 2019 than in BOP-operated facilities (259 per 100,000 federal prisoners). Almost 87% of the 65,027 state prisoners and 89% of the 7,125 federal prisoners who died in custody from 2001 to 2019 died of illness.” There are many steps that should be taken after any inmate death.

  • Body camera footage from all officers involved should be examined.
  • Medical records from the inmate should be reviewed.
  • An autopsy may need to be performed.

A large number of inmate deaths are totally preventable and due to inmates that do not receive adequate care. For example, correctional officers may not have given an inmate proper care when they were going through an overdose. The family of any person that died in custody may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
