WILLOWS, CALIFORNIA (October 29, 2022) – A woman identified as M Cohan was injured in a Willows semi-truck accident on State Route 162 by County Road D.
Glenn County officials are saying that the accident took place around 2:00 p.m. on October 18. M Cohan, 30, of Willows was traveling down State Route 162 with her two children when a semi-truck failed to yield and crossed directly in front of her path.
Both vehicles collided in the roadway. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victims. M Cohan complained about pain following the collision.
Police officers interviewed the semi-truck driver following the crash. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Willows Semi-Truck Accidents
Semi-trucks can weigh as much as 80,000 lbs and can be substantially more dangerous than passenger vehicles. They are also much more difficult to handle. According to the FMCSA, “Elements that influence the occurrence of a crash may take place hours, days, or months before the crash. They include driver training and experience, vehicle design and manufacture, highway condition and traffic signaling, and weather conditions.” There were three critical events in particular that were involved in the majority of semi-truck accidents.
- Semi-trucks ran out of room in their own lane of travel.
- Semi-truck drivers lost control of their vehicle due to speed, cargo shift, vehicle systems failure or other reasons.
- Semi-trucks ran into the rear of another vehicle in their own lane of travel.
All semi-truck drivers will need to get a commercial license and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. Many collisions are due to truck drivers that ignore stop signs. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 22450, the driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to an intersection shall stop and yield the right of way to cross traffic that is close enough to pose a hazard. If a driver fails to yield at a stop sign, this could form the basis of a negligence claim.
Depending on the facts of any case, the company that a truck driver worked for could be held at fault for a crash. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were operating within the course and scope of their job duties. For example, a truck driver may have been delivering packages when they were involved in a crash. Victims of semi-truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries including:
- broken bones
- Head injuries
- Lacerations
- Spinal cord injuries
The FMCSA requires commercial trucks to carry between $750,000 – $5,000,000 worth of liability coverage. Any person that is injured in a truck accident may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help with lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Sadly, truck companies will often fight hard to deny liability for any crash. A truck accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your rights are.
