Airbag Lawsuits
Takata Airbags Recalled
1 in 7 vehicles on the road affected
In May 2016, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued an order expanding the recall of defective airbags manufactured by order Japanese company Takata. This recall order included air bag inflators made without a desiccant (a drying agent).
In 2019, a second recall for dangerous Takata airbags was announced, involving around 37 million U.S. vehicles. 19 automakers, including Mercedes Benz, General Motors, Honda, and Acura, are recalling more than 100 million defective airbag inflators worldwide. This recall was for the replacement Takata inflators, which were used to repair defective airbags from the previous inflator recall, announced in 2014.
Takata uses ammonium nitrate in the air bag inflators. High temperatures and humidity cause this chemical to deteriorate and become unstable. This can lead to violent explosions of the metal canister housing the inflator, which hurls metal shrapnel inside the vehicle.
The replacement airbags being recalled are Takata model PSDI-50, manufactured at the company’s Monclova, Mexico factory. Because this model contained a chemical desiccant, they were believed to be safe. However, injuries are still being caused by replacement front airbag inflators.
Worldwide, at least 23 people have been killed and more than 300 have been injured due to airbag deployments in which the Takata inflators exploded.
