Uncovering the Cause of the Maui Wildfire
Update 08/21/2023
Maui’s recent wildfires are now the deadliest in modern U.S. history, with a death toll of 114 confirmed victims and an estimated 1,000 still unaccounted for. Maui Police Chief John Pelletier described the tragedy as “unprecedented.” The search continues in the historic town of Lahaina, where 78% of the designated burn zone has been searched so far.
The initial figure for the missing was over 2,000, but as communications are restored, the number decreases. The task of identifying victims, especially in the aftermath of a wildfire, is complex. Only nine victims have been identified up to now. The FBI has initiated a site for DNA matching, and traditional methods like dental records might be challenging due to the fire’s intensity. Rapid DNA-testing machines have also been deployed, which were previously used in incidents like the 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California.
However, the situation in Maui is unique, as it’s a hotspot for tourists, making victim identification more challenging. It may take time to account for all direct deaths, such as burn victims, those who drowned, or those who succumbed to smoke inhalation.
In the aftermath of the Maui Wildfire, residents have initiated efforts to track the missing. A volunteer-led spreadsheet helps to update the status of those missing. For the families of the missing, it’s an agonizing wait, hoping their loved ones are safe.
Update 08/16/2023
In the early hours in Lahaina, Maui resident Shane Treu captured a power pole snapping due to strong winds, its fallen lines igniting a fire on live video. This footage now serves as potential evidence, suggesting utility lines might have been a primary ignition source for what became one of the deadliest wildfires in U.S. history.
Hawaiian Electric Co. is under scrutiny for not cutting off power despite high wind warnings. The dilemma of prioritizing safety with power shut offs versus ensuring connectivity and notifications for residents was emphasized by both Hawaiian Electric’s CEO, Shelee Kimura, and Maui Police Chief John Pelletier.
Evidence from the videos suggests potential long-term neglect of Maui’s power grid by Hawaiian Electric. Robert Marshall from Whisker Labs also highlighted significant electrical grid disruptions, potential fire starters, on the day of the incident.
In the wake of this devastating event, multiple investigations are underway to understand the circumstances and ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future.
Update 08/14/2023
As Hawaii faced a fire risk red flag warning, the exact origins of the Maui fires remain undetermined. Major Gen. Kenneth Hara of the Hawaii Army National Guard highlighted that despite no knowledge of the fire’s ignition source, dry conditions combined with low humidity and strong winds from Hurricane Dora set the stage for the wildfires.
J.D. Hessemer, a Maui resident, spoke of the alarming conditions, citing uncontrollable winds and fallen power lines. Governor Green echoed the sentiment, attributing the fires to a mix of global warming, drought, and the effects of the distant Hurricane Dora.
Hawaiian Electric, the state’s primary power supplier, faced scrutiny for allegedly not implementing wildfire prevention measures in anticipation of the storm. They responded, emphasizing their preventive efforts and stating that the fire’s cause remains under investigation.
With escalating winds, emergency helicopters were grounded on Aug. 8. Acting Hawaii Gov. Sylvia Luke declared a state of emergency, subsequently supported by a federal disaster declaration from President Biden.
Despite the imminent threat, Maui’s warning sirens remained silent, relying instead on emergency alerts to phones and broadcast media. Rep. Jill Tokuda raised concerns about power outages potentially hindering these alerts.
Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez announced a comprehensive review of the decisions and policies surrounding the wildfire events.
