Two People Injured In Bel Air Cement Truck Accident On West Sunset Boulevard

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (July 22, 2022) – At least two people were injured in a Bel Air car accident with a cement truck along West Sunset Boulevard.

Los Angeles County police officials are saying that the accident took place around 8:40 a.m. on Wednesday. A passenger vehicle was involved in a collision with a concrete mixer truck under unclear circumstances.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victims. Both victims were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. A full investigation into the Bel Air collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In Los Angeles Cement Truck Accidents

Thousands of people are seriously injured in collisions with trucks every year in the United States alone. According to the FMCSA, “Fatigue, drinking alcohol, and speeding are major factors in motor vehicle crashes overall. Although their presence does not always result in a crash, these three factors, as well as other driver, vehicle, and environmental factors, can increase the risk that a crash will occur.” Cement trucks can be particularly dangerous for a number of reasons.

  • A fully loaded concrete truck can weigh as much as 66,000 lbs and can therefore be extremely difficult to stop.
  • Concrete trucks typically have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of smaller vehicles.
  • Concrete trucks have a high ground clearance which can make under-ride collisions more likely.

Concrete truck drivers will typically need to get a commercial driver’s license and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. They will need to get specialized training in order to learn how to operate their vehicles safely. Many collisions are due to truck drivers that make dangerous left turns. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21807, the driver of any vehicle intending to turn left must first yield the right of way to all drivers that are close enough so as to pose a hazard. When a driver makes an abrupt left turn prior to an accident, they can be held at fault through a civil claim.

When the driver of a commercial vehicle is negligent, their employer could be vicariously liable. In general, companies are liable for the negligent actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. For example, a cement truck driver may have been delivering materials to a construction site. Victims of cement truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Many victims of truck accidents may not realize the severity of their injuries for several weeks or months after an accident. Any person that is injured due to the negligence of a cement truck driver may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A Los Angeles truck accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
