Man Killed, Woman Injured In South Pasadena Car Accident By Marengo Avenue and Maple Street

SOUTH PASADENA, CALIFORNIA (July 30, 2022) – A man was killed and a woman was injured in a South Pasadena car accident with a van by Marengo Avenue and Maple Street.

Los Angeles County officials are saying that the collision took place around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The driver of a Toyota Sienna van was heading north on Marengo Avenue when it failed to stop at a stop sign and hit the two pedestrians as they were crossing the street.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help both of the victims. The man and woman were both taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Sadly, the man died at the hospital. It remains unclear if the driver of the van will face any citations for the crash. A full investigation into the South Pasadena collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In South Pasadena Car Accidents

Los Angeles County has one of the highest instances of pedestrian collisions in all of California. According to ABC 7, the vast majority of pedestrian accidents occur at a relatively small number of intersections. There are are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a pedestrian collision.

  • Speeding
  • Drunk driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Driver fatigue

All drivers have a legal responsibility to exercise due care in order to avoid pedestrians. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 22450, “The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within, an intersection shall stop at a limit line, if marked, otherwise before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection.” Any driver that goes through a stop sign without yielding will typically be held at fault for a resulting collision.

Many vans are used for commercial purposes such as medical transport. If the driver of a van was working at the time of a collision, the company that they were working for could be held at fault. Companies are typically liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. There are a number of steps that should be taken after any collision.

  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • A thorough, independent investigation should be conducted.

When a pedestrian is killed in a car accident, the at fault driver can be held liable through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Sadly, though, insurance companies will often fight extremely hard to deny liability for a collision. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
