LAPD Motorcycle Officer Injured In Carson Truck Accident By Avalon Boulevard and Albertoni Street

CARSON, CALIFORNIA (April 28, 2022) – A Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) motorcycle officer was injured in a Carson truck accident by Avalon Boulevard and Albertoni Street.

Los Angeles County police officials are saying that the accident took place around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday. An LAPD officer was riding his motorcycle when he was involved in a collision with a semi-truck under unclear circumstances. The officer was knocked to the ground and injured in the process.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. The LAPD officer was taken to the Harbor UCLA Medical Center in order to receive treatment.

The driver of the semi-truck remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. A full investigation into the Carson truck accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In  Carson LAPD Motorcycle Officer Accidents

Motorcyclists are uniquely vulnerable in collisions. They lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are more likely to be overlooked by other drivers. Semi-trucks can be particularly dangerous with their large blind spots. On top of this, police officers on motorcycles must regularly respond to emergencies and are nearly always at risk of being injured by an inattentive driver. There are a number of factors that could contribute to a truck accident.

  • Drivers may be distracted by their phones.
  • Drivers may be traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions.
  • Drivers may be intoxicated.
  • An intersection may have an obstructed line of sight.

When a police officer is injured in a car accident, they may have legal recourse through the worker’s compensation system. Worker’s compensation is a no-fault system in California. An injured worker does not need to demonstrate that another driver was negligent in order to receive benefits. An injured worker should let their employer know they were injured on the job as early as possible. They should also file an Application for Adjudication of Claim. An injured police officer may also be able to seek aid through a third party liability claim. A third party liability claim may be possible when a worker is injured by an entity separate from their employer.

A third party could, potentially, be the driver of a semi-truck. All drivers have a legal obligation to yield to authorized emergency vehicles responding to an emergency. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 21806, the driver of every other vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to an authorized emergency vehicle by pulling to the right edge of the road or highway until the emergency vehicle has passed. Even if a motorcycle officer was not responding to an emergency, all truck drivers must exercise due care and follow all traffic laws to avoid a collision. There are many steps that should be taken after any truck accident.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.

Any person that is injured due to the negligent actions of a truck driver may be able to seek compensatory damages through a civil claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Many victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries for several months after an accident. A truck accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
