Unconscious Inmate Died While In Custody At The Tulare County Jail
TULARE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (July 30, 2022) – An inmate died in custody after being found unconscious inside of his jail cell at the Tulare County Jail on Monday.
Tulare County officials are saying that the incident took place on Monday. An inmate was being housed at the Tulare County Jail when he was found unconscious.
He was transported to the hospital in serious condition. Sadly, he could not be revived and died at the hospital. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Liability In Tulare County Inmate Deaths
Thousands of inmates die in custody every year. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, “In 2018, state prisons reported 4,135 deaths (not including the 25 people executed in state prisons); this is the highest number on record since BJS began collecting mortality data in 2001.” There are a number of steps that prisons should take in order to keep inmate safe.
- Correctional officers should be properly trained.
- Prisons should be adequately staffed.
- Inmates should be properly screened when they enter the prison.
All inmates have a constitutional right to receive reasonably adequate healthcare. If a jail or prison is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. For example, correctional officers may have failed to give inmates proper care if they were experiencing a medical emergency.
