YUBA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (November 15, 2022) – A 30-year-old inmate has tragically died in custody at the Yuba County Jail after going through some type of medical emergency.

Yuba County officials are saying that the incident took place around 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Correctional officers were alerted that an inmate was experiencing some type of medical emergency.

Medical staff began emergency treatment and transferred the inmate to Adventist Health and Rideout in Marysville. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the inmate died as a result of their injuries.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Yuba County Inmate Deaths

Thousands of inmates die in custody every year. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “In 2019, a total of 3,853 prisoners died in state prisons or private prison facilities under a state contract, a decrease of 284 deaths from 2018. The number of federal prisoners who died in the custody of a facility operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) increased from 378 in 2018 to 381 in 2019.” There are many steps that jails should take in order to help keep inmates safe.

  • Correctional officers should be well trained.
  • Jails should be adequately staffed.
  • Inmates should be periodically checked.
  • Inmates should undergo a health screening before being admitted.

All jails have a legal obligation to protect inmates from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. Inmates are also entitled to reasonably adequate healthcare. When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. For example, correctional officers may have failed to give an inmate proper care after the inmate began experiencing a medical emergency. There are a number of steps that should be taken after any inmate death.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • An independent investigation should be conducted.

The family of any inmate that died in custody may be able to seek some measures of justice through a wrongful death claim. A civil claim can help cover many of the expenses that can come with the sudden loss of a loved one. Unfortunately, jail officials will often fight hard to deny responsibility for the death of any inmate in their care. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
